Marionette lines run from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin, named after the hinged mouth of a puppet. As they deepen, they can give a downturned, sad look at rest. Softening them is a core part of our marionette line treatment.
They form as the lower face loses volume and skin elasticity, so the tissue settles into lines from the mouth corners toward the chin. Loss of chin support, an active depressor muscle and gravity all contribute. Sun and smoking speed them up.
They usually deepen from the forties onwards. People often notice them alongside a downturned mouth, feeling their lower face looks heavier or sadder than it used to at rest.
A noticeable softening of the lines and a less downturned lower face are realistic. Very deep lines improve but may not disappear entirely, and treating the chin and jaw as well often gives a more lasting, natural result. We advise honestly at consultation.
