The nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Everyone has them, but they deepen with age and can make the face look tired. Softening them well is often about supporting the cheek too, which we do within our nasolabial fold filler.
They deepen mainly because the mid-face loses volume, so the cheek deflates and the tissue slides down and settles into the fold. Skin thinning, repeated smiling and gravity all add to it. This is why treating only the line can look heavy.
They usually deepen from the late thirties and forties. People often notice their smile lines looking permanent, or the area between nose and mouth casting a shadow that makes them look tired.
A softer, less tired-looking fold is realistic. Complete erasure is not the aim, because some creasing when you smile is natural. Supporting the cheek usually gives a more natural result than filling the line alone, and we plan the balance at consultation.
