So I Hear You Have A Question...

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

To Answer Your Question...

Dermal fillers are generally safe when they are placed by a trained injector who knows the facial anatomy and can manage a complication. Most side effects are mild and short lived. Serious problems are rare, and the biggest single factor in your safety is who is holding the needle, not the product itself.

The Deatils...

Where the real risk sits

The material used in most fillers is hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already produces, and it can be dissolved if there is a problem. That is a genuine safety advantage. The risk is far less about the gel and far more about placement, because the face is full of blood vessels and the difference between a good result and a complication is often a couple of millimetres. Anatomy knowledge, careful technique and slow, conservative injecting are what keep filler safe.

What a safe appointment looks like

You should have a proper consultation before anything is injected, covering your medical history, medications, previous treatments and what you actually want. You should be told the risks in plain English and given time to think rather than pushed to decide. The treatment should happen in a clean clinical room, not a kitchen or a hotel, using a sealed product you can see being opened. You should leave with aftercare advice and a number to ring. Our safety and standards page explains how we run appointments.

Complications and how they are handled

The complication that matters most is a blocked blood vessel, which is rare but needs treating quickly. Any clinic offering filler should be able to recognise it, hold the medication used to dissolve filler and know exactly what to do next. Ask any clinic whether they keep that medication on site and how they would reach you out of hours. You should also be taught what to look for yourself, which is what our warning signs page is for.

To Summarise:

Filler is safe in trained hands and much less so in untrained ones. Judge the injector and the appointment, not just the product or the price.

I recently had polynucleotide under-eye injections with Rachel, and I couldn’t be more pleased with both the experience and the results so far. From the moment I arrived, Rachel was incredibly welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable. She took the time to explain the treatment thoroughly and made me feel completely comfortable and reassured throughout the entire process. The treatment itself was surprisingly pain-free, with minimal discomfort and very little downtime afterwards. I’ve already noticed a significant improvement in the appearance of my under-eye area - it looks brighter, more refreshed, and the fine lines have softened noticeably. As someone who works night shifts in the NHS, tired-looking eyes have always been a concern for me, so seeing such positive results already has been amazing. I’m excited to complete the rest of my treatment course and see the full benefits. I would highly recommend Rachel to anyone considering polynucleotide treatments. Her professionalism, expertise, and friendly approach make the whole experience exceptional ❤️

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

They carry different risks rather than one being simply safer. Hyaluronic acid filler has the advantage of being dissolvable if something needs correcting. What matters far more is the training of the person injecting and how well they assess you first.
No. Being able to dissolve filler is a useful safety net, not a reason to be casual about placement. Dissolving has its own considerations and is a clinical decision, so it should never be the reason to rush into treatment.
Ask who is injecting, what training they hold, whether they have indemnity insurance, and what happens if something goes wrong at eight in the evening. Our guide on how to check your injector gives you the full list.
